When choosing food packaging, it is evaluated in many ways. First of all, the food packaging must be suitable for the food to be packaged. Considering that the food will remain in the package until consumed, it should prevent physical, chemical and microbiological deterioration until the expiry date. The packaging to be used should protect the food from environmental conditions.
We said that the main task of packaging material is to protect food. However, in some cases, the packaging material used can become the main problem. The reason for this is the substances in the structure of the packaging material and the migration of these substances to the food. Packaging materials undergo physical and chemical analyzes before production or use. Depending on the results of these analyzes, the suitability of the packaging for use can be determined.
One of the analyzes performed on the packages is the “Maximum Extractable Fraction Tests”. These tests can be performed with different substances.
