Specular Gloss of Plastic Films and Solid Plastics

Specular Luster can be expressed as a measure of the light reflected from the surface of materials such as plastic film or solid plastic. Gloss arises as a result of the unique molding process of the materials or as a result of the surface texture.

The brightness of a material is affected by environmental conditions. It may also lose its shine due to surface wear. Determining the gloss of a packaging material is an important test parameter in determining processes such as product development and performance determination.

Brightness measurements are based on a standard. The angle of reflection (20o, 60o or 85o) should be set in accordance with the standard.

Standards based on specular gloss determination in packaging materials:

ASTM D2457-13 Standard Test Method for Specular Gloss of Plastic Films and Solid Plastics
ASTM D523-14 Standard Test Method for Mirror Gloss
