Standard Test Methods for Mechanical-Shock Vulnerability of Products Using Shock Machines

ASTM D3332 - 99

The purpose of these test methods is to provide the user with data on product shock brittleness that can be used in the selection of optimum cushioning materials for shipping containers or for product design change. It covers the determination of shock brittleness of products.

This fragility information can be used to design shipping containers for transporting products or to improve product durability. Unit or consumer packages transported in an outer container are considered products for the purposes of these test methods. It includes two test methods:

Method A: Used to determine the critical velocity change of the product.
Method B: used to determine the critical acceleration of the product.

Within the scope of the standard, firstly Method A and then Method B obtain the necessary data.
