This guide contains the basic information needed to ensure that the selected packaging passes the United Nations (UN) packaging certification at a level suitable for its intended use. This guide covers test procedures for the carriage of dangerous goods packages for net masses, excluding those used for infectious materials, radioactive materials, cylinders and other containers for gases.

UN performance tests are also based on the degree of hazard posed by the proposed materials to be packaged, which are assigned to a particular packaging group. Only packaging designs that meet UN performance standards are marked with a UN mark. The tests generally include drop test, leak test, stack test, vibration test.

The main focus of this guide is to identify the essential information required for United Nations (UN) packaging certification to ensure that the selected packaging is certified at an appropriate level for the intended use. The tests are tests for the transport of packages of dangerous goods with a net mass not exceeding 400 kg (880 lb) or a capacity of 450 L (119 gal), excluding packages for infectious substances, radioactive materials, cylinders and other containers for gases.
