Standard Test Method for Odor and Taste Transfer from Polymeric Packaging Film

ASTM E1870 - 11

This test method is intended for use by a trained sensory panel experienced in using a density scale or rank order and familiar with descriptive terminology and references for packaging materials. Data analysis and interpretation should be performed by a trained and experienced sensory expert.

The application of this test method results in an FPS or sequencing data and can be considered as a technique by which suppliers and end users can evaluate the flavor impact of the packaging material used in the product.

Determining the suitability of a packaging film for a particular end use must be based on a predetermined set of criteria, including FPS or ranking score. Information from transfer tests can also be used to assess the origin of any transmitted flavor or odor.

This test method is used for single (mono) layers, co-extruded and laminate materials. The focus of this test method is the evaluation of the film for the perceived natural odor and the transfer of package-related odors or flavors, or both, to water and other model systems (soft food analogues).
