The ASTM E460 – 21 standard is basically carried out to determine the changes in the sensory properties of the products stored in the packaging materials, apart from determining the shelf life.
A packaging material can affect the product in many different ways during the storage process. The first effect is migration. That is, the compounds in the packaging material pass into the food. Second, the packaging material can absorb components from the products, reducing the flavor/aroma intensity of the product. Thirdly, external pollutants may pass from the external environment to the product due to packaging.
With this standard, two different packaging types can be compared and evaluated. A glass product and a metal product can be compared with this test method and a decision can be made about its use.
