Thermoplastic films used for flexible barrier packaging can be eroded during handling and shipping. If the packaging film is eroded, the integrity of the contents may be compromised. If the product is a medical product, its sterility may be impaired.

This test method provides a comparative material performance ranking that can be used as an indicator of relative end-use performance. While abrasion resistance and durability are often related, the relationship varies with different end uses and different factors may be required in any calculation of durability estimated from specific wear data.

The resistance of material surfaces to abrasion can be affected by factors such as temperature and humidity test conditions, abrasive type, pressure between sample and abrasive, sample mounting or tension, and type, type or amount of finishing materials such as:
