The EN 1186-3 standard includes the test method for measuring the general migration of plastic materials and materials intended to come into contact with foodstuffs, by contacting them with volatile food simulants at temperatures of 4 °C and above and at temperatures not exceeding the reflux temperature.
With this test method, the overall migration is determined as the mass loss of non-volatile substances per unit surface area, per kg food simulant, or per substance. The type or shape of the material is taken into account when choosing the immersion or contact process with a single surface used in the test method.
General migration of Plastic Substances and Materials in Contact with Food is carried out with test methods chosen considering the worst conditions of use. Test samples are contacted with volatile simulants and evaluation can be made by weighing the dry residue of the evaporated simulant.
