EN 13130-1: Materials and articles in contact with foodstuffs - Plastics substances subject to limitation - Part 1: Guide to test methods for the specific migration of substances from plastics to foods and food simulants and the determination of substances in plastics and the selection of conditions of exposure to food simulants

EN 13130-1: Specific Migration - Determination of Phthalates

The effects of phthalates such as DBP, BBP, DEHP, DINP and DIDP, which are used in the production of plastic materials and materials that come into contact with food, on human health have been determined in accordance with the studies. The negative effects on human health in general can be counted as a decrease in liver and fetal testosterone.

It is estimated that the amounts of phthalates that a person is exposed to through food additives and food contact materials and materials are as follows. (for ranges of minimum-maximum estimates for all ages, all studies, and all countries)

- DBP average (0.042 - 0.769) and P95 (0.099 - 1.503), µg/kg bw/day
- BBP mean (0.009 - 0.207) and P95 (0.021 - 0.442), µg/kg bw/day
- DEHP average (0.446 - 3.459) and P95 (0.902 - 6.148), µg/kg bw/day
- DINP average (0.232 - 4.270) and P95 (0.446 - 7.071), µg/kg bw/day
- DIDP mean (0.001 – 0.057) and P95 (0.008 – 0.095), µg/kg body weight/day)

Considering both the effects on human health and exposure, Phthalate Detection in Plastics and Materials in Contact with Food is seen as a regularly performed test.
