ISO 18606

ISO 18606 standard includes packaging procedures and requirements for organic recycling. It only covers packaging that can be recovered by organic recycling.

Within the scope of ISO 18606 standard, each physically separated component of a package can be evaluated separately and it can be determined whether it is recovered by organic recycling. The ISO 18606 standard is applicable to the organic recycling of used packaging, but does not address regulations regarding the recyclability of any packaged waste product.

The following four aspects are addressed for each of the packaging components under the ISO 18606 standard:

• Biodegradation;
• Decomposition during the biological waste treatment process (ie composting) ;
• Adverse effects on the biological process;
• Adverse effects on the quality of the compost obtained, including the presence of highly regulated metals and other environmentally hazardous substances.
