Metal Packaging Double Seam Controls

In metal packaging, it is very important to be able to establish the integrity of the boxes. The most important point in metal packaging, which is frequently used in the beverage and food industry, is to be closed with a double clamp. Double clamping is a boxing process used to seal between the can body and the lid. It is generally accomplished by mechanically interlocking five layers of material. With this process, hermetic closure is applied to protect the contents against contamination and deterioration.

In double clamp operation; Three layers of cans and two layers of can bodies are used. It is done in three stages with a double clamping machine:

  • Compression - the body of the can is held firmly in place while the lid is lowered into the correct position.
  • 1st roller operation – the lid hangs on the side of the box and a cylinder is pushed against the flange of the lid until it folds neatly around the edge of the stem.
  • 2nd roller operation – a second cylinder exerts pressurized force on the can's hook, creating a fully interlocked and hermetically sealed double seam.

Double clamping in metal packages properly is a condition that needs to be checked regularly. The defect in the double clamp may cause the product it contains to deteriorate. Double seam strength is important for products that will be stored for a long time.
